A Stylish Stay: Alila Uluwatu, Bali
No matter how jaded a hotel stayer you may be, nothing can detract from the breathtaking arrival at Alila Uluwatu. The beyond 180 degree horizon views deliver instant calm conveyed through layers of aquatic tranquility - on close inspection it's hard to dissect where pool, ocean and sky start amongst the giant wash of blue. As one of Bali's longstanding resort brands (though still just a baby by normal count), which put the Island of the Gods at the centre of the luxury map - the ensuing years and mounding competition have done naught to diminish the grandeur and panoramic beauty of Alila's clifftop locale. Peeling eyes away from the horizon for a mere moment we're quickly checked in (spritzed and moisturised) and with that, whisked away via golf cart to our hill perched private villa. Slick, sexy and completely ecologically sustainable, this all-villa resort maximises its poolside vistas with nest like cabanas providing a divide between villas without detracting from the horizon views. The villa interiors are as spacious and luxurious as you could hope for; the money shot provided by the completely retractable lounge room sliders which make gliding straight into the pool from the generous day bed a little too easy. Even easier after some room service cocktails.
On site dining options provide ample variety - we were particularly fond of the authentically spicy offerings from the Balinese restaurant Warung for a casual poolside lunch. Dinner provided an opportunity for a more refined experience at Quila, though the multiple course degustation was a little more show than go. It was the only moment Alila's effortlessness had a blip in an otherwise perfect stay.
The hotel grounds are painfully photogenic, thanks to its cubed motif which repeats its right angles in every direction, spiked throughout by swaying palms in perfect formation. Alila's insta-famous cantilevered stick-box terrace which hangs precariously over the edge of the rugged cliffside is breathtaking for all the right reasons, and provides the perfect backdrop to all manner of jealousy inducing visual fodder.
The jewel in the already bedazzled crown at Alila Uluwatu belongs to its 50m infinity edge pool, studded by private cabanas it offers a haven of relaxation. Surprisingly never more than a few other guests made cameos, leaving us to enjoy the spoils of the heavenly horizon views uninterrupted. As the hustle of Seminyak quickly soaked away - Alila Uluwatu could offer little more to improve our stay.
Heaven is indeed a place on earth.
